Vocational Discernment: The Important Work of Accompaniment When Helping Young People Hear and Respond to God’s Call

Using documentation from the preparation for the 2018 Synod on Young People, The Faith and Vocational Discernment, the presenters from the USCCB Secretariat for Clergy Consecrated Life and Vocations along with representatives from the National Conference of Diocesan Vocation Directors and the National Religious Vocations Conference, will explore the many ways Youth Ministers can encourage young people to deepen a “vocational sense of life” as defined by the final document from the Pre-Synodal Gathering of Young People in March of 2018. In addition to learning from the young people’s document, we will be drawing on data collected from national studies related to the topic of vocational discernment, and sharing some “best practices” from around the United States. We hope to encourage the participants, as they go out in service to be in the words of Pope Francis, “bold and creative in this task of rethinking the goals, structures, style and methods of evangelization in their respective communities” (Evangelii Gaudium, 33), to see vocation as a gift and a call from God.
