Going, Going, Gone: The Dynamics of Disaffiliation in Young Catholics

  • Bob McCarty,
  • Katherine Angulo, Archdiocese of Atlanta

In the study, The Dynamics of Disaffiliation in Young Catholics, Saint Mary’s Press describes extensive research on young Catholics who have left the Church. This session will identify the underlying dynamics that lead to disaffiliation, describe the factors that reinforce those dynamics, and examine the implications for parish life, vocational discernment, liturgy, and pastoral ministry. We will hear about these issues from young adults, in their own voices. And we will also propose pastoral strategies that enhance affiliation and engagement with the faith community. Special consideration will be given to the broader sociological context for religious disaffiliation in secular cultures, as well as unique manifestations of disaffiliation in the Hispanic populations.
