In fact, the most accurate predictor that a faithful young person will become a faithful adult is not a good youth conference or weekly attendance at RE. The most accurate predictor of lifetime faithfulness is daily prayer. How can we, as ministers to youth, cultivate both in our young people and ourselves…a greater daily awareness of and devotion to God. This might be the most important shift you can make in your ministry. The mission of the church is not to bring all things together in youth ministry, but to bring all things together in Christ! How can you do that more effectively? Come and find out. Compassionate Care for Youth on the Margins Description With today’s understandings of the impact of toxic-stress and trauma on brain health, the implications for work in areas of adversity is paramount for ministry. Working in constant exposure to trauma changes both people and organizations. However, bringing a trauma-informed perspective to that environment can change both the narrative and the outcome. Using the power of story and image, this session will focus on three distinct themes: -Impact of toxic-stress on brain health -The role of toxic-stress in organizational life (vicarious trauma) -Bringing a trauma-informed approach to our prayer The Liturgy: Every Parish’s Resource For Forming Life-Long Disciples Description Have you ever imagined your parish or high school liturgies where the youth are engaged and taking active roles in liturgical ministries? This Pre-Conference will offer formation for youth leaders through the use of focused presentations, music, and stories to enable youth leaders to envision a new paradigm in ministry to the young Church. This is a paradigm in which engaging youth in the liturgical life of the Church is first and foremost; one in which youth are formed alongside, but not necessarily through a youth group. Come and be refreshed, enriched, and challenged to grow! Learn how to engage your teens to become full, conscious, active participants at your parish and high school liturgies! Do Not Be Afraid: Helping Our Youth Live Free from Fear Description The fear of not being loved or accepted are powerful forces in young people’s lives. Earlier this year Pope Francis encouraged young people to harness the power of discernment and courage when faced with fears and insecurities. As youth ministers, you want to help our young people find the courage and faith to face their fears because, as the Pope said, “fear must never have the last word but rather should be an occasion to make an act of faith in God…and in life!” How can youth ministers help support our young people struggling with life’s challenges? Join us as mental health professionals experienced in emotional and spiritual youth development provide practical strategies to help youth ministers: -assess for risk of suicide or harm -listen without judgment -give reassurance and information -encourage appropriate professional help -encourage self help As Pope Francis reminded our youth, “do not be afraid” is repeated in Scripture 365 times, “as if to tell us that the Lord wants us to be free from fear, every day of the year.” Join us as we explore together how to support our young people in their personal journey to greatness and a life free from fear. Going, Going, Gone: The Dynamics of Disaffiliation in Young Catholics Description In the study, The Dynamics of Disaffiliation in Young Catholics, Saint Mary’s Press describes extensive research on young Catholics who have left the Church. This session will identify the underlying dynamics that lead to disaffiliation, describe the factors that reinforce those dynamics, and examine the implications for parish life, vocational discernment, liturgy, and pastoral ministry. We will hear about these issues from young adults, in their own voices. And we will also propose pastoral strategies that enhance affiliation and engagement with the faith community. Special consideration will be given to the broader sociological context for religious disaffiliation in secular cultures, as well as unique manifestations of disaffiliation in the Hispanic populations. Speakers Bob McCarty Katherine Angulo Archdiocese of Atlanta National Leadership Forum on Ministry with Young Adults Description This National Leadership Forum will explore the connection between the key global initiatives of the Church's ministry with young adults - and what they mean for our everyday work in parishes, campuses, or dioceses, and within our local ministries and apostolates. Come see how the Synod, World Youth Day, V Encuentro, the National Dialogue, and the phenomenon of the rising growth of disaffiliated young people intersect to each other and to our own ministry efforts. The Forum will be a place to hear from leaders integral to these major movements, as well as best practices across the United States. This program is open to all pastoral leaders whose work intersects (in any way) with young adults in college and in their 20s and 30s. Speakers Julianne Stanz Diocese of Green Bay Vocational Discernment: The Important Work of Accompaniment When Helping Young People Hear and Respond to God’s Call Description Using documentation from the preparation for the 2018 Synod on Young People, The Faith and Vocational Discernment, the presenters from the USCCB Secretariat for Clergy Consecrated Life and Vocations along with representatives from the National Conference of Diocesan Vocation Directors and the National Religious Vocations Conference, will explore the many ways Youth Ministers can encourage young people to deepen a “vocational sense of life” as defined by the final document from the Pre-Synodal Gathering of Young People in March of 2018. In addition to learning from the young people’s document, we will be drawing on data collected from national studies related to the topic of vocational discernment, and sharing some “best practices” from around the United States. We hope to encourage the participants, as they go out in service to be in the words of Pope Francis, “bold and creative in this task of rethinking the goals, structures, style and methods of evangelization in their respective communities” (Evangelii Gaudium, 33), to see vocation as a gift and a call from God.
